1. Mullayanagiri Peak - the one place you can't skip

If you only get to visit one place in Chikmagalur, make it Mullayanagiri. Your trip is genuinely incomplete without it. As the highest peak in Karnataka, the views from the top are simply beyond words.

The peak gets its name from a small temple at the summit dedicated to Mullappa Swamy, a saint who meditated in a cave near the top. The road up is one of the most scenic drives in India - but come with good driving skills, because the narrow roads get tricky when thick fog rolls in.

From the parking area it's about a 10-minute walk to the peak. Feeling adventurous? You can trek instead - a 3–4 km trek of moderate difficulty that ends in a panoramic view of the surrounding hills. I've been here multiple times, and it amazes me with its natural beauty on every single visit.

2. Hebbe Waterfalls - where the journey is the reward

You know how people say "it's not about the destination but the journey"? At Hebbe Falls, it's about both. The falls sit inside the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, and getting there is half the fun.

You take a jeep ride of about 6 km through a thick forest stretch, then walk another half a kilometre to reach the falls. The ride costs around Rs. 400 per person two-way. It sounds steep, but by the end you'll call it a proper paisa-vasool ride.

The reward is a 170-metre-tall waterfall that will leave you spellbound. You can wade in, play in the water, and just soak up being close to nature.

3. Baba Budangiri / Dattatreya Peetha - where coffee came to India

Want to know how coffee was introduced to India? The history unfolds here at Baba Budangiri. A saint named Baba Budan discovered coffee while returning from Haj. To bring its taste home, he wrapped seven unroasted coffee beans around his belly and planted them in these very hills. Chikmagalur's weather did the rest, and the region became the coffee capital of India.

Baba Budan used to sit and meditate on this hill, and there are footprints of Sri Guru Dattatreya next to his shrine. That's why the site is worshipped by Hindus and Muslims alike - Hindus call it Datta Peetha, Muslims call it Baba Budangiri. It's a beautiful example of two faiths living in harmony, usually wrapped in thick, dreamy fog.

Nearby: Manikya Dhara & Galikere

Just 3 km away is a small waterfall called Manikya Dhara - the fall itself is modest, but the panoramic surroundings are what blow your mind. Another 4 km away is Galikere; if you're visiting post-monsoon, don't miss it.

4. Jhari Waterfalls (Buttermilk Falls) - a swim in a natural pool

Jhari Waterfalls, also called Buttermilk Falls, sits between Baba Budangiri and Mullayanagiri - a perfect stop on that route. It's inside a private estate, so you reach it via a jeep ride: around Rs. 700 for a group of 7, two-way, along a memorable off-road trail.

The black rock against the green surroundings makes it stunning, and it's called Buttermilk Falls because the water looks like buttermilk pouring from the top. There's a natural pool at the base - the safest spot to get in and chill, and well suited for kids and families. Adventurous types can climb one level up for a thrill, but anything beyond that should be avoided.

5. Z Point, Kemmangundi - the trek with the best panorama

Kemmangundi is close to Hebbe Falls, around 40 km from Chikmagalur city, and famous for its red soil. You've got two options here. The relaxed one: visit Rajbhavan Park and soak in the surrounding hills. The adventurous one: take on the Z Point trek.

If you love hiking, choose Z Point - the views from the summit are spectacular. On the way you'll pass Shanti Falls, gorgeous in the monsoon but mostly dry the rest of the year. Not in the mood to trek? The Rock Garden in Kemmangundi is still a lovely spot to spend time with family.

6. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary & Tiger Reserve - for wildlife lovers

Wildlife enthusiast? Don't miss the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, which spans about 500 sq km across Shivamogga and Chikmagalur districts. Per the forest department, it's home to roughly 30 tigers and 20 leopards, so a safari here has a genuinely high chance of a big-cat sighting.

The best place to stay is River Tern Lodge, run by the Forest Department - so good that you won't feel let down even without a sighting. Choose between a jeep safari or a boat safari, and add Bhadra Dam to your list while you're here.

7. Hirekolale Lake - the underrated photography spot

Hirekolale Lake is one of the lesser-known but most beautiful spots in Chikmagalur, just 10 km from the city. It's a man-made lake built for the town's water supply and irrigation, and from its banks you can see Mullayanagiri Peak - look carefully and you'll even spot the curvy roads winding up to it.

With the Mullayanagiri backdrop, clear skies and still water, it's a dream for photography. Visit in the early morning or evening for the calmest, most peaceful experience.

8. Kallathigiri Falls - a temple stop on the Kemmangundi route

On the way to Kemmangundi, you'll find Kallathigiri Falls - a cascade tumbling down from the Chandradrona hills, flowing right opposite the Veerabhadreshwar Temple. To reach the temple you cross the water stream. It's a great 15–20 minute stop to stretch your legs before continuing to Kemmangundi.

9. Mallandur Sunset Point - hills meet paddy fields

Mallandur is a small village about 20 km from Chikmagalur. Near it is a little hillock that serves up the best view of the surrounding hills - green ridges on one side, paddy fields on the other. Visit during or just after the monsoon and the countryside roads leading here are an absolute delight.

10. Exotic Stays & Coffee Plantation Tours - sleep inside a coffee estate

Chikmagalur is packed with exotic stays that are beautiful and surprisingly pocket-friendly. Pick a guesthouse surrounded by coffee plantations, and most will offer a coffee plantation tour where you learn how coffee is grown and processed. Mornings here are best spent on a slow walk through the estate.

Even if you're not staying on an estate, you can still join a plantation tour offered by many coffee farms. And I highly recommend the Coffee Museum, run by the Coffee Board, where you can learn everything about India's favourite bean.
