By Car-
Chikmagalur, which can be reached by car from Bangalore at a distance of roughly 250 kilometres, makes for the ideal weekend getaway. For a traveller, taking the NH75 is the quickest and most practical route over these distances. The greatest time to visit this location, which is surrounded by the picturesque Western Ghats, is from September to March; the gushing waterfalls during the monsoon season make the ideal backdrop for a family snapshot.
The scenic Western Ghats are abundantly sprawled with beatific forests and mountains and many rivers and waterfalls making it an amazingly scenic drive to Chikmagalur.
Bangalore is connected with Chikmagalur via National Highway as well as State Highways. The best route is via NH 75 which is around 243 kms and takes about 4 hours without considering traffic.
This first drive through the NH 75 usually follows this route map and is the shortest distance between Bangalore and Chikmagalur- Bangalore > Yediyur > Channarayapattana > Hassan > Belur > Chikmagalur
The second route map is on NH 75 via NH 73 which is around 247 kms and takes about 5 hours to reach the end destination – Bangalore > Kunigal > Yediyur > Dasarighatta > Arsikere > Chikmagalur
The third route map perhaps is the longest and can be taken if traffic jams are anticipated on the other two popular routes. The distance measures out to be around 298 Kms via NH 48 and takes around 6 hours to reach Chikmagalur - Bangalore > Tumkur > Sira > Hiriyur > Ajjampur > Kadur > Chikmagalur
There aren't many options for transportation if you wish to take the train from Bangalore to Chikmagalur.
Number of trains: There is only one passenger train, the Yesvantpur Chikmagalur Fast Passenger (Train Number 56278), which runs every day. It departs from Yeshwantpur station, located about 8 kilometres from central Bangalore, at 3:15 pm and arrives in Chikmagalur at 10 pm the same day. It travels 245 kilometres in about 6 hours and 45 minutes, making 20 stops at intermediate stations.
However, there is much better rail communication between Bangalore and Kadur, which is roughly 40 KM from Chikmagalur. You may therefore find six to seven trains from Bangalore (Krishnarajapuram, Bangalore City, and Yesvantpur stations) to Kadur, the majority of which will cover the distance of around 200 KM in three to four hours assuming you are alright with travelling by road from Kadur to Chikmagalur. Nearest Railway Station: Kadur (code name DRU), which is located about 40 KM away from Chikmagalur and is close to the main city area, is the closest railway station.
The Chikmagalur bus stand is not far from the adjacent train station. From there, take a bus or another mode of transportation. From the train station to the bus stop, it takes less than five minutes. The railway station also has an auto-rickshaw stand where you can get a ride to the hotel of your choice.
Being a small town, Chikmagalur currently lacks an airport that connects with important Indian cities for commercial passenger operations, which is problematic for individuals who wish to travel by air. The closest airport is at Mangalore, which is around 120 kilometres and a 3-hour drive from Chikmagalur.
If you still want to go by air, you can choose from a number of quick regional flights that go from Bangalore to Mangalore and take less than an hour. You can then travel the remaining distance by road, either in a rental car or by bus.
